Why EFT?
Once you know the basics, it can be used by anyone, anytime and anywhere. There are so many advantages to Emotional Freedom Techniques. A few that stand out the most are:
What is EFT and how can it help you?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and combines the elements of Chinese medicine with modern Psychology. It’s like acupuncture but without needles where the stimulation of the acupuncture points occurs through fingertip tapping. This, in turn, reduces stress and regulates the nervous system. It can help to clear any blockages created by unresolved emotional issues.
It’s common knowledge that stress underlies most physical and mental conditions. And stress can be reduced significantly with EFT tapping, lowering the intensity of other ailments. Here are some of the issues that can be addressed using EFT: anxiety, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, phobias, addictions, procrastination, chronic pain, limiting beliefs, low self-esteem and lack of confidence. How does EFT work?
EFT works by stimulating the acupressure points on the body, which sends calming signals to the part of the brain engaged in a stress (fight, flight or freeze) response. When we simultaneously recall the triggering memory, that information is sent to the same part of the brain to initiate the stress response. As the brain receives two contradictory messages at the same time, it prioritizes the soothing signals from the body (information that it’s safe) rather than something that is happening in the mind. That breaks the negative association of the event with stress response and we are able to think about the memory without being emotionally triggered by it.
Where does EFT come from?
EFT tapping on acupuncture points is considered a form of physical stimulation of the body (‘somatic stimulation’). The idea that somatic stimulation could play a role in psychological healing was slowly developing in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1950s psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe started to treat veterans of WW2 with diaphragmatic breathing (type of a ‘somatic stimulation’) while recalling the traumatic memory (exposure therapy). Combining the physical stimulation of the body with the exposure element removed the emotional content from the memory. Another form of somatic stimulation, which is tapping on the acupuncture points, was tested by clinical psychologist Roger Callahan. He was influenced by the work of a chiropractor George Goodheart who was treating physical conditions by tapping on acupuncture points (‘Applied Kinesiology’). Callahan started to employ acupoint stimulation (stimulation of the acupuncture points) for psychological problems and in the 1990s turned it into Thought Field Therapy (TFT). One of Callahan’s students Gary Craigh simplified the method and called it Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
The science behind EFT
Clinical EFT is an evidence-based method with over 100 studies done and published in peer-reviewed professional journals. They meet the evidence-based standards defined by the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) Task Force. What does an EFT session look like?
A typical session usually starts with some kind of grounding technique depending on the individual preferences. These include short breathing exercises, visualization or light physical movements and they all help to shift the attention from the mind into the body. After that, we start talking and tapping lightly with fingertips on the acupuncture points on the body and the tapping continues till the end of the session. For the whole time, we work at your own pace to make sure you feel safe and supported throughout the process. During an EFT round, you repeat out loud the setup statement while continuously tapping on the side of the hand. Then you move to the other acupuncture points repeating the reminder phrases which are usually shorter versions of the setup statement’s wording. The first part of the setup statement is derived from exposure therapy and focuses on the negative experience/emotion with the aim of breaking the conditioned fear response to that event. The second part comes from cognitive behavioural therapy and provides the cognitive frame of accepting what is, which opens up the path to change and looking at the situation in a new way. During most of our time together we focus mainly on the negative. However, the end of the session emphasizes the positive cognitive shifts and the feelings of safety and well-being. Quick self-help routine
EFT is a great tool that can help you reduce stress and emotional overwhelm, making you feel better in a short amount of time. Just follow these simple steps:
- focus on the emotion or the sensation in the body that you can connect to in the present moment
- rate the feeling on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is no emotion/sensation and 10 is the maximum intensity
- repeat out loud a set-up statement 3 times continuously tapping on the side of the hand
example set-up statement (you change what’s in the brackets): ‘Even though ……………… (I’m so anxious/my body feels tensed), I choose to accept myself’
- now it’s time to tap through the other points on the body repeating how you feel
example: I’m so anxious/ my body feels tense
- you tap on those points until you feel relieved (it may take a few rounds)
- now measure again the intensity on the scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is no emotion/sensation and 10 is the maximum intensity
- continue tapping until your emotional distress goes down to zero or the level that is acceptable to you
